Georjean Busha Hertzwig has always been the observer, watching the world through a unique lens. Growing up on a farm where she loved training horses and dogs, Georjean had a keen sense of animal anatomy. Over time she further cultivated this gift by studying how animals move and the way their bodies function. Even at a young age she could see that every animal had a unique form dictated by their environment and purpose. This life-long love for nature is what helps Georjean capture the essence of each creature, and infuse their individual personality into her art.

Sketching was the first medium Georjean used and she would often spend time sitting in the orchard near her home drawing every animal she could see. Later she began sculpting and loved how the motion and spirit of an animal could be captured so fully this way. In 2005 she was commissioned to create a piece with pastels and although she considered herself more of a sculptor than a painter, she accepted the challenge. The result was “Ken’s Bucky,” for which she was later awarded the Art Spirit Foundation/Dianne B. Bernhard Gold Medal for Excellence.

Georjean now offers commissioned works including pastels, oil, and sculpture. She continues to push herself to grow and create which is highlighted exceptionally in her recent work, “Chickadee Bird Fountain.” This stainless steel sculpture recreates the motion, energy, and liveliness of the small bird happily bathing in a shining, flowing bath.

Over the years Georjean has won numerous awards and been featured in several publications. She continues to find inspiration in the natural world and continues to train dogs for herding competitions. While she has come far from where she started, she still has the wonder and bright eyes of the little girl who would escape to the orchard to sketch what inspired her most.

Seeing everything as beautiful, as an artist I am granted the gift of allowing the energy of a moment to express itself in form in a way that lives beyond itself. Color, lines, composition all combine to reveal the soul of nature, uncovering the inner beauty of its very being. Thus can the dance that is life be frozen in a way that can continue to be received anew as time unfolds. It is my joy to create forms that invite those who witness them to move through the portrayed moment into the timeless and boundless realms of eternity and infinity that are the true being of us all
